Native Guide: Restaurants
by Lisa Hirsch
This is only a tiny selection of the variety available in Oakland and Berkeley. Oakland's Chinatown has many fine Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants that your Native Guide isn't familiar with!
| Price Key (per person) |
| $ | Less than $10 |
| $$ | $11 - $20 |
| $$$ | Over $20 |
| $$$$ | Ridiculous |

Buttercup Kitchen (444-2976) $
229 Broadway near 3rd St.
Sun - Th 6 a.m. - 10 p.m., F - Sat 6 a.m. - midnight
Varied menu. No reservations unless you want a private room for 8 or more people. Breakfast all day.
Le Cheval (763-8495) $ - $$
1007 Clay at 10th St.
Sun 5 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., M - Sat 11:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Vietnamese; a terrific restaurant with a big, varied menu, set in a refurbished warehouse. A sports bar in the corner is one oddity, but the restaurant is big enough to keep that from being intrusive. Reservations recommended for large parties; has own parking lot.
Chez Panisse (548-5525) $$$$
1517 Shattuck, Berkeley, between Cedar and Vine
M - Sat dinner only
Seatings at 6:00 to 6:30 and 8:30 to 9:30
This restaurant changed American cooking, and after 25 years of innovation, it remains one of the best restaurants in the country. Very expensive ($38-68 per person, fixed price, not including tip or beverages), superb food (fixed menu, no choices). Reservations required, and often are not available.
Chez Panisse Cafe (548-5049) $$ - $$$
1517 Shattuck, Berkeley, between Cedar and Vine
Lunch M - Th 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., F - Sat 11:30 - 4

F - Sat 5 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.
Some reservations available on a same-day basis M - Th, otherwise first-come, first-served.
Upstairs at Chez Panisse is an informal cafe serving excellent California cuisine a la carte. Expensive ($15 and up per person) but not ruinous. Wheelchair accessible for lunch, which is served upstairs and downstairs, but for dinner at the Cafe, reserve far in advance, since the heavily-booked downstairs restaurant is the accessible space.
Dutch East Indies (444-6555) $ - $$
Jack London Village
Sun 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.,
M & T closed, W - Sat 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Gingerbread House (444-7373) $$$
741 5th St. between Brush and Castro

Dinner T - F seatings at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Sat 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Reservations required. Only the Gazebo area is wheelchair accessible. Cajun and Creole. Mileage varies considerable on this restaurant; Native Guy said "don't miss this one!" while your current Native Guide finds the food mediocre - she's had one decent (not great) meal there out of three attempts. She wishes the waitresses didn't wear gingerbread costumes, and dislikes the fact that while you must order in advance, you won't necessarily get what you ordered. She also thinks an expensive restaurant should manage to cook vegetables for each individual meal, rather than serving bowls of them family style. There's a takeout shop with cute toys, and the red beans & rice and Creole spice mixes are good. However, if you're planning on an expensive meal in the Bay Area, you'll do better for your money at Bay Wolf or the Chez Panisse Cafe instead.
Hahn's Hibachi (628-0717) $ - $$
63 Jack London Sq., catty-corner from the hotel
Open 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., 7 days a week
Jazzy pomo design makes this place look like an Italian cafe, but it's really a Korean restaurant! The food isn't as good as the very cleverly written menu, but it is cheap and plentiful. Excellent service.
Happy Belly Deli (835-0446) $
Jack London Square
Sat & Sun 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., M - F 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Natural food deli, basic breakfast food, sandwiches and soups, decent selection of vegetarian food.
